DVD: Quick Takes: PMC Basics by Tim McCreight
Tim McCreight teamed up with the progressive design team at White Dog Arts to create an instructional video that breaks new ground. The breakthrough here is the use of digital technology to present information modules that can be controlled by the viewer. Instead of the usual start-here-end-there progression, QuickTakes: PMC Basics consists of 30 short clips, or takes, each addressing a specific aspect of PMC. The key to the concept is a console that displays full navigational options at all times. Using either a DVD player with a TV or a computer (Mac or PC), viewers can click through the seven chapters, moving through each short segment with a click.

Coloring Base Metals: A Practical Guide by Christine Cox (Foreword by Tim McCreight), 34 pages
This excellent self-published booklet is full of 24 recipes and techniques, plus 5 ways of sealing color onto base metals. Though simple in presentation and language, this booklet is for working metalsmiths as well as for beginners. Experienced, easy-to-follow advice from metalsmith Christine Cox and pages of color photos show colored brass, copper and nickel silver and photos of finished pieces to inspire you. It's chock-full of coloring ideas including patinas, paints, colored pencils and much, much more. Best of all, no special equipment or particularly hard-to-find chemicals are needed for the techniques.

Our Metal Journal Idea Book is chock-full of ideas and how-tos for making your metal and leather journal unique. There are ideas on how to decorate your covers and spine and also instructions for how to use various tools, oxidizer, etc.

Etching metal (copper, brass, nickel) is surprisingly easy and, other than the etchant, you can do it using only house-hold items! No special equipment is required. Our 20-page Metal Etching How-To and Idea Book covers how to prepare, etch and finish metals. It assumes that you have access to Ferric Chloride (available at most computer stores - resources listed in booklet).

This is NOT a how-to book. It is for those who already know how to marble and need a quick reference of how to create some of the patterns.

This is the booklet Christine uses in her Marbled Paper class. It shows the combing/raking patterns for the following patterns:

  • Stone

  • Gel Git

  • Zebra

  • Waved Gel Git

  • Peacock

  • Angel Fish

  • Nonpareil

  • Waved Icarus

  • French Curl

  • Bouquet

  • There are also sections on recommended reading and recipes.

These are books that we believe in and sell for other presses. You can add these right to your Volcano Arts shopping cart. If you are interested in other titles by Tim McCreight, email me and I'll order it in our next order. All sales on books are final. Make your selections carefully.

Books With Girth By Cherryl Moote
This book is great for those wanting to learn tons of bookbinding stitches in a friendly and comprehensive way. It has all the basics; how to score and fold paper, covering boards, paper grain, etc., but its most unique quality is that it has all those stitches we've been doing for the last several years (link stitches, Secret Belgian Binding, piano hinges) AND some new and fun book structures. It also has a chapter on cases and covers. One of my favorite features is that Cherryl does all the math for you and even shows you a couple of really cool tricks for figuring out those redundant math problems all bookbinders face. It opens flat so that you can follow the directions while you work. Books with Girth is a worthy successor to Cover to Cover.  Spiral-bound paperback.

Kaleidascope Kaleidoscope
By Suzanne Simanaitis
The editor of ARTitude Zine, Suz Simanaitis, invited over 30 artists to submit projects and articles for this great book. Contributors include Christine Cox, Randi Feurerhelm-Watts, Lisa Cook, Juliana Coles, Marilee Fosbre, Terry Lee Getz, Sylvia Luna, Pilar Pollock and of course, Suz Simanaitis and many others. The projects range widely and the book definitely speaks to the "Volcano Arts Tribe." It's a really fun book and I'm proud to have contributed.
Illuminating the Word: The Making of the St. John's Bible
This book is incredible! It tells about the making of the first fully illuminated manuscript (hand-written) Bible to be made in over 500 years. The details of how the calligraphic hand was developed, the quill and parchment preparation and a million details that are of interest to calligraphers, bookbinders (though the binding of the bible isn't covered in this volume) or Bible scholars. A gorgeous book for a very reasonable price.
Making the Most of Your Flex-shaft

This is the most modern and useful book we've found for learning about your Flex-Shaft Tool. Chapters cover:
  • Introduction to the Flex-shaft system
  • Choosing burs, mandrels and bits
  • Grinding wheels, brushes, buffs and attachments
  • Polishing compounds and abrasives
  • Maintenance
  • Beyond the basics
The Penland Book of Jewelry: Master Classes in Jewelry Techniques
Like their book on bookbinding, this book from Penland is incredible. Part gallery, part artist showcase, part instruction manual; inspiration just leaks from this book. Excellent photography, galleries and instructions throughout.
Penland Book of Handmade Books: Master Classes in Bookbinding Techniques
This book is stunning! This book is a gallery, artist showcase, instruction manual and inspiration between 2 covers. Those of us who have been bookbinding for several years appreciate it for its advanced and inspiring projects. New and experienced bookbinders will be captivated by the excellent photography and presentation. When it isn't on the coffee table it will be in your studio.
Metal Clay by Sherri Haab

This book is great for beginning to intermediate users of Precious Metal Clay. Sherri is an incredibly versatile artist and shows projects with a broad range of styles. All the project steps and equipment are covered.

The (mini) Art Book from the editors of Phaidon

I absolutely love this inexpensive book. I've used it for years as a great quick reference. When an artist's name comes up and I'm unfamiliar with her work I just turn to her name in the alphabetical book and I find out just a paragraph worth of information about her and a photo of a representative painting or other work. What I love most is that, since it's in alphabetical order, it isn't tied to a particular period of time or school of art. You never know what you're going to get when you turn the page! It's a lot of fun to browse.

Thomas Mann by Andrei Codrescu

This book is pure eye candy for metalsmiths. Mann's jewelry is contemporary and complex and a joy to see. This is a biography (with lots of photos of his work) of Thomas Mann. It is not a how-to book. Highly recommended

Stained Glass: Project & Patterns by George Shannon and Pat Torlen
This is the best beginner book we've found for learning how to solder and cut glass. Lots of photos and a troubleshooting section to help if something goes wrong. You can't beat the price either!
Fabric Art  Journals by Pam Sussman
A perfect marriage of fabrics and bookbinding, this book has a wide array of projects from one of Christine's favorite instructors!
Books, Boxes & Wraps by Marilyn Webberley & JoAn Forsyth
This book has become a classic. It has so much information and great projects. Projects build on each other and refer back to other projects quite a bit.
Product image for ASIN: 157990646X The Complete Book of Bookbinding by Josep Cambras
Wow! I was so impressed by the quality of the instructions and photos in this book. This is the best book on bookbinding I've seen in a long time. Perfect for a more advanced binder looking for challenging projects.
cover Making Memory Books by Hand by Kristina Feliciano

Even though the name implies that this book will be about scrapbooking, it is a good book on making artist journals. It is full of interesting projects and ideas. For projects that are easy to learn yet innovative enough to be interesting, this is a great choice.

cover Making Books and Journals by Constance E. Richards

This beginner level book is a fun resource. It is part of the "Weekend Crafter" series of books and has a good selection of projects ranging from Japanese stab bound to Coptic bindings. There are also some less traditional book structures which are perfect for beginners.

cover Creating Handmade Books by Alisa Golden

Page Folds loves this book because it has the best drawings of stitches going. The instructions are clear and the projects are fun and diverse.

Making and Keeping Creative Journals by Suzanne Tourtillott

This is my current favorite book about making artsy books. The examples of journals are innovative and interesting. The stitching drawings leave a lot to be desired but if you muddle through you will be rewarded with a fresh, exciting journal. The author also goes into reasons for journaling and ideas for what to put in your journals.

cover Cover to Cover by Shereen LaPlantz

This is one of the first books that started the current rage with creating artist books. It is also one of the first books you should buy if you are interested in artist books. The drawings are good and the samples and projects are excellent. Christine Cox considers this a "must" for bookbinders of all levels.

cover Making Journals by Hand by Jason Thompson

This is a very popular book loaded with examples and projects for artist books. There is a section on image transfers and another on non-adhesive inclusions that make the book worth the price.

cover Creative Bookbinding by Pauline Johnson

Originally published in 1973, this book is a classic. Excellent photographs and drawings illustrate the process of making traditional books in an easy-to-understand format.

The Thames and Hudson Manual of Bookbinding by Arthur W. Johnson

This is a textbook originally published in 1978 in London. It is a fantastic resource and is full of incredibly practical information. The author goes to great lengths to explain not only what to do, but why. This is an invaluable resource and one of the most useful books on traditional bookbinding that I own.

Bookbinding as a Handcraft by Manly Banister

For traditional bookbinding this book is an excellent resource. There are some of the best process photographs going. This is an great book for learning how book crafters ply their trade. Excellent directions abound. If you are interested in traditional bookbinding, this book is essential.

Japanese Book-Binding by Kojiro Ikegami

If you love Japanese stab bound books and are interesting in learning the classic patterns, this book is a must-have. Great photographs of the steps in the process really make this a useful book. Note, this is not a book for the first-time bookbinder. It discusses at length the traditional Japanese bookbinding methods.

Non-Adhesive Binding by Keith A. Smith

Rich in diagrams and photographs this book is an excellent resource for any bookbinder or book artist. The book includes Coptic, piano-hinge, Japanese stab bound and many other diverse projects.

Special Note:

The current interest in exposed spine books can, at least partially, be attributed to Keith Smith. His books are not for the faint of heart as they largely feature complex sewings but his diagrams are very helpful. Each of his books is an in-depth study of its subject matter so the books are not a good choice for picking up with the hopes of quickly learning and then finishing a project. At times the description of a single stitch will comprise several paragraphs. Mr. Smith wants his audience to understand how a book is made, not just how to produce quick results. The books are also laid out so that each of the projects builds on those that preceded it. I highly recommend these books, but be prepared.

1- 2- & 3-Section Sewings by Keith A. Smith

The second in the series about non-adhesive bindings, this book focuses on more complex sewings. Working through the book is an education in itself.

Exposed Spine Sewings by Keith Smith

This third book in the non-adhesive binding series is, as are the other 2 volumes, a wonderful resource. Especially excellent are the sections on sewing on raised supports. The sewing patterns in this book are quite complex and should not be attempted by beginners unless they are engineers.

Bookbinding for Book Artists by Keith Smith and Fred Jordan

Another great book, this one focusing primarily on sewing over cords and tapes and working with leather.
