Christine Cox 1/07
Enameled Copper Butterfly
on Wooden Covers Description:
In an ancient time when
only churches and nobles could afford them, books were sometimes
decorated with gold, ivory, gems and other precious materials.
In honor of those
Treasure Bindings make Christine's version; wooden
or metal books with metal,
cabochons, enamels and more. Topics will include kiln-fired
enameling, torch
soldering (not soldering irons), bezel-setting enamels and stones,
etching metals, depletion gilding, metal fabrication
basics, cover preparation, hasps and clasps and much more.
This class is a more
advanced extension of Book Technic, 1. Each student's book will be
unique.

This model of a 15th century binding is more complex than those we
will do in class, but it was made using some of the same skills you'll learn.

Sterling and Nickel Silver and Malachite
on Wooden Covers Notes:
-
Everything for all projects
is supplied by the instructor, but working with sterling silver, exotic
woods or similar upgrades will be extra (your choice).
-
This class is about making the structure of the book more than it is
about stitching. The focus of the class is on designing a book and
then using enamels, metal, wood and other media for the covers.
-
*
The most successful students are those who have fabricated metal
and/or have bound books before. No knowledge beyond that will be
assumed. Are you a beginner who is good with your hands and a fast
learner? Give me a call and we'll talk about whether this class is
for you. A certain amount of hand-strength is required in any metal
fabricating class.
-
Completely unique and unavailable anywhere but at the
Volcano Arts Studio.

(optional):

Magnification (I
have a few OptiVisors to loan out)

If you have
a respirator mask (like painters use, available at hardware
stores - filters should be for aerosol particulates) bring it
along. Don't feel that you need to buy one just for this class.
I have lots of paper masks that you can use for the week.
-
I have plenty of
medium and large latex gloves. If you are allergic to latex or
have extra large or extra small hands, please bring several
