Blasted Leaves
While every student's book will be unique, this example shows some
possibilities.
Glass can be so beautiful. Celebrate that beauty
by making a book "art object."
Description:
Make book covers in combinations of glass, wood, metal and more. We'll be drilling, bead
blasting and fusing glass, making metal closures and decorations, making
wooden and metal covers and so much more! We'll use kilns, power tools and
hand tools for some of the most unique books you'll ever see.
Truly "mixed media" this class
will give you basic skills for working in several media.

You have got to click on this photo. The book is too cute!
Sally says, "Spay and neuter your pets."
Notes:
-
Everything for all
projects is supplied by the instructor, but working with sterling
silver, exotic wood or similar upgrades will be extra (your choice).
-
This class is about making the structure of the book more than it is
about stitching. The focus of the class is on designing a book and
then using glass, metal, wood and other media for the covers.
-
*
The most successful students are those who have fabricated metal,
and/or have worked with glass,
and/or have bound books before. No knowledge beyond that will be
assumed. Are you a beginner who is good with your hands and a fast
learner? Give me a call and we'll talk about whether this class is
for you. A certain amount of hand-strength is required in any metal
fabricating you do (your choice).
-
Completely unique and unavailable anywhere but at the
Volcano Arts Studio.
What to Bring
(optional):
-
Journal or pad for
notes
-
Magnification (I
have a few OptiVisors to loan out and we also sell them)
-
If you have
a respirator mask bring it
along (like painters use, available at hardware stores - filters
should be for aerosol particulates). Don't feel that you need to buy one just for this class.
I have lots of paper masks that you can use for the week.
-
I have plenty of
medium and large latex gloves. If you are allergic to latex or
have extra large or extra small hands, please bring several
pairs to use during the week.
