We'll discuss such topics as which flux
to use when, cool bench tools and tricks, how to set up and get comfortable
with a torch, metal properties and how to exploit them, soldering surfaces,
metallurgy for the common artist, etc. The strength of
this is that a class can be really wide ranging. Come to my studio, play
with my toys, make art, meet like-minded students and expect anything!
Comfort with a Torch
Knowledge is power |
Knowing how a torch works and why will make you
comfortable using one. We have both air/acetylene torches and an oxy/propane
torch. With 1 torch for every 2 students and lots of safety training you'll get lots of practice time
with the flame.
Students receive an (excellent) instruction booklet to take home and use. |

Work by Students
Inspiration
Many of my students have never soldered or
handled a torch before. Some have learned but would like to take the
next step. Some students are returning to jewelry making after years of
tending to other priorities. Check out some of the work done by
students in this class and get a feel for the range of creative
possibilities.

Notes
-
Everything for all
projects is supplied by the instructor, but working with sterling
silver or similar upgrades will be extra (your choice).
-
*
The most successful students are those who have fabricated metal before. No knowledge will be
assumed. Are you a beginner who is good with your hands and a fast
learner? Give me a call and we'll talk about whether this class is
for you. A certain amount of hand-strength is required in any metal
fabricating you do.
-
Completely unique and unavailable anywhere but at the
Volcano Arts Studio.

What to Bring
-
Journal or pad for
notes
-
Magnification: I
have a few OptiVISOR to loan out and we also sell them here, so
don't run out and buy one.
-
If you have
a respirator mask bring it
along (like painters use, available at hardware stores - filters
should be for aerosol particulates). Although a respirator mask
is highly recommended, don't feel that you need to buy one just for this class.
I have lots of paper masks that you can use for the week.
-
I have plenty of
medium and large latex gloves. If you are allergic to latex or
have extra large or extra small hands, please bring several
pairs to use during the week.
